Emily’s Story

Emily is a student of the human condition. Her career spans fields that have allowed for deep curiosity about what makes us all unique beings. She began studying Yoga after an introduction course during college in 1998. After moving to Seattle, she began her practice of massage therapy in 2005. The integration of these two skill sets lead to the creation of Mindful Curves Yoga & Bodywork. This business is a vessel to share Emily’s deep love and knowledge of the human form and it’s infinite potential for healing and comfort. She combines that love with her life experience living in a fat body that has been injured through adventurous activity. She recognizes that fat folks are often under cared for due to anti-fat bias.

She has had the privilege to work with clients of all ages, abilities, sizes and gender. She brings joy, playfulness and a sense of curiosity to every interaction. Every session is integrative and tailored to the client’s present moment needs.

Allow me to help you find comfort in your body through gentle movement and therapeutic touch.

My Practice

I have cultivated an integrative approach to bodywork wherein, I employ a variety of techniques to facilitate functional change for my clients. I am known to offer tips to nurture wellness and manage stress in daily life using breath-work, self myofascial release and stretching. My sessions are a fluid blend of muscle specific bodywork and relaxation. As a former roller derby skater, I am especially fond of working with athletes in recovery from injuries. I have had the privilege to work with clients in a wide range of communities, with a wide range of abilities and challenges.

In May 2024 I graduated from Naropa University with a MA in Somatic Body Psychotherapy and Social Justice Counseling. I am currently practicing as a counselor at Radical Healing in Fort Collins, CO. I am excited to continue to offer massage in Boulder as I build my counseling practice. I have previously practiced massage therapy in DC and Washington State, where I was an active member of my local chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association. When I am not studying, teaching Yoga or doing massage, I enjoy roller-skating, bicycling, and making collages. I have a bright and upbeat personality and have been known to randomly break in to song.

Cultural Resume

  • -I identify as a fat, able-bodied, middle-aged, white, cisgender woman; I am also queer; my relationship to the word queer is best described by bell hooks, “Queer' not as being about who you're having sex with (that can be a dimension of it); but 'queer' as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and that has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live.”

-I was born into a lineage of privilege in an upper-middle-class, white suburban household, educated within a well-funded school system with robust extracurricular activities where the arts were encouraged. I was assessed as Gifted in grade 3, which shaped a path of educational opportunities.

-My ancestry can be traced back to original settler colonialists in Virginia and West Virginia. In service of reparations for this I am committed to ongoing personal, professional, and societal decolonization.

-I benefited from religiously diverse parents, a Southern Baptist mother and a Zen Buddhist father. I was encouraged to seek my own spiritual path, which is informed by a Christian upbringing and self study of Buddhism, Modern Paganism, and a devotion to the 8-Limbed path of Yoga.

-I self-identify as neurodivergent, suspecting placement on the Autism Spectrum, though formal assessment remains unexplored due to economic and ethical considerations.

-I have lived experience with and recovered from disordered eating, specifically Binge Eating Disorder and Atypical Anorexia, which ignited a passion for embodied approaches to eating disorder treatment.

-Despite a privileged childhood, my adult life unfolded within the working poor demographic, navigating various helping professions that did not pay a living wage.

-I am dedicated to social justice, actively engaging in anti-racism, and an advocate for collective liberation.

-Tremendous gratitude to The Adaway Group for first introducing the notion of a cultural resume.

You are enough.

I accept you as you are, in the present moment.

Testimonial:

As a person of size, finding someone who I trust to work on my body is a tricky thing. After meeting Emily, though, I was immediately set at ease. She is warm, caring, and really knows what she's doing. Emily helped me make friends with what was going on in my body and has improved the quality of my life drastically.

Testimonial:

My first yoga class with Emily was a revelation! Emily offers plenty of "bus stops" on the way to the ultimate expression of a yoga pose with the understanding it is something you are working toward. I finally found the "practice" in "yoga practice" and, subsequently, my ability to approach yoga with less judgement of my body. She is also an amazing massage therapist and brings a level of empathy and caring to her work that enhances everything she does.
